Sinuohe
Sinuohe restaurant. Entrance is bottom right.
Sinuohe (pronounced shin-oo-ee) is a first floor restaurant
on the southern side of town, on the main road that serves most of
the hotels. It is on the left side of the road when you have your
back to the town centre. The Sinuohe shares the same entrance off
the main road as the Red Lion pub and several shops. This is a little
off-putting, because you tend to get hassled by vendors hoping that
you are heading in to buy something. Once past that barrier and up
the stairs, the Sinuohe opens into a larger space than you first expect.
The decorations are bright, adding to the feeling of openness. As well
as the large internal restaurant there is a balcony where drinks and
snacks can be taken. You can also eat on the balcony, but if you are
having a full meal, the waiters tend to prefer you to eat inside.
The table linen is not the crispest we have seen, but passable, and the
staff are smart and formally dressed.
The restaurant is very generous with the rolls and also provide a small
mezze or salad and dip.
The restaurant caters for large groups including coach parties, and can
arrange a self-service buffet if they are given adequate notice. They
can become busy when these groups are in, but most of the time, between
the large groups, the Sinuohe is quiet, with plenty of waiting staff
to provide attentive service.

Our View
Spacious, good food, excellent value and quiet when there
are no groups.
The food range is mostly Egyptian with a good selection for
vegetarians. Prices are very keen.
We like to price the steaks as they tend to be a benchmark
for other dishes. In the case of the Sinuohe, a steak
with sauce is around LE30 so it ranks price-wise with
Maximes. Other main courses start even lower. For example,
there is a superb Mousaka with meat for just LE15, soups
and salads are mostly LE4-LE5 and a range of vegetarian
pasta meals are priced around LE10. Inside the Sinuohe restaurant
The food appears freshly prepared and is served hot.
Once we have found the Tagen a little more oily than
usual, but meals rarely disappoint.
The range of choices isn't huge so you might not want to come
every day if you like variety. The Sinuohe also lacks
the atmosphere of the Sofra restaurant. Nevertheless,
if you are looking for Egyptian food there is plenty
to satisfy you here for
prices that are competitive for the tourist
areas. We think it is worth a try. |
