Dragon

Dragon restaurant

Dragon Chinese restaurant.

There are several Chinese restaurants in Luxor but most are in or associated with hotels. The Dragon is the exception, being independent of the hotels.

The Dragon is on the southern side of town, near the Nile Palace (previously called the Meridien) hotel.

The entrance is at road level, but you go straight upstairs to this large restaurant on the first floor. There is a bar but customers are shown directly to tables.

First appearances are OK. The seating is pretend leather but the tables are well dressed and service is prompt and attentive. Take a little more time to look around and the decorations appear very tired.

Our View

Ok if you want a Chinese restaurant that is not linked to a hotel, but not special.

The menu is so average that you have probably already seen it many times outside Egypt. Main course meats are around LE25 and most rices are under LE10. As customers tend to order several varieties per course the cost mounts and will probably total around LE160 for two with dessert but no alcohol.

The food itself is more western Chinese than Asian Chinese and rather bland. There were also several bits of bone with the meat. When we mentioned this there was no indication of surprise or regret - we just got the cold shoulder and service suddenly became less attentive. Perhaps we should have expected bone scraps and are not supposed to bring such things to the attention of the staff.

The Dragon is famous for its fried banana dessert with ice cream, which has always been a challenge to eat on your own and often shared although, like Wagon Wheels, they don't seem to be as big now as they were years ago.

We have visited many times over several years and have had decent but not spectacular meals. Altogether rather disappointing. You can't help thinking that they would have to improve or suffer if someone else opened an independent Chinese restaurant nearby in competition.
